Town of Athabasca Brick School Restoration Committee

Town of Athabasca Council has created a subcommittee to manage the restoration of the Athabasca Public School (Old Brick School). Mayor Balay, Councillor Edwards and Councillor Yuill (representing the Alice B. Donahue Library and Archives Board) sit and the board as well as three members of the public.


Time Line

1913: The Athabasca Public School was built.

1965: Athabasca Public School was closed by the County of Athabasca #12 School Committee.

1996: Family and Community Social Services moved their offices out of the Brick School into their new, purpose-built office.

2015: Members of the public were asked to submit their ideas of how the Brick School could be used as a community space in Athabasca.

2018: Athabasca County transferred $800,000 to the Town of Athabasca and no longer had a share in the building. The Multiplex Society continues to manage the Nancy Appleby Theatre which is attached to the east side of the Brick School complex.

2019: The Province of Alberta designated the Athabasca Public School as heritage site.

2021: The Athabasca Public School Restoration Committee was struck to begin the process of researching and managing the restoration of the Brick School and the committee met in 2021 and 2022 to discuss the process of applying for grants and first steps in the restoration.

2022: Te committee identified asbestos contamination in the basement and Councillor Edwards began writing grants to apply for funding to manage the abatement of the asbestos.
